- Jazz vormt een merkwaardige, maar mooie en invloedrijke muziekvorm die in een korte tijd - ongeveer een halve eeuw - tot volle wasdom kwam en in een schilderachtig wordingsproces een groot aantal andere muziekstijlen met grote vanzelfsprekendheid in zich opnam. Het geeft deze boeiende muziek tevens iets tweeslachtigs met aan de ene kant de enorme diversiteit die zich vooral na de tweede wereldoorlog manifesteerde, maar met tegelijk een merkwaardige coherentie die je als luisteraar meteen doet beseffen: ja, dit is jazz.

- De trombone is een koperen blaasinstrument. De buis van de trombone is vergeleken met de trompet langer, het mondstuk is groter en de beker is wijder. Het instrument kan daardoor lager spelen.
De verschillende tonen ontstaan door het in- en uitschuiven van de buis. Elke stand van de buis (er zijn er zeven) noemt men een positie. Het glijden van de ene naar de andere toon heet glissando.

- De vraag wat de blues nu precies zijn is net zo onbeantwoordbaar als die wat jazz is. Louis Armstrong gaf op zo'n vraag ooit ten antwoord: 'Lady, als u dat moet vragen zult u het nooit kunnen begrijpen'. Sommige schrijvers omzeilen het probleem door in details in te gaan op wat de blues níet zijn, maar de beste manier is in mijn optiek om voorbeelden te geven van alle verschillende invloeden en stromingen en deze dan ook te laten horen. Vanaf de oudste gezongen blues tot rockbeat en zydeco, van Big Bill Broonzy tot Magic Slim en van de legendarische Bessie Smith tot Bonnie Raitt. De blues moet je voelen en ondergaan...
- In de slaventijd (tot 1863 in Amerika) zongen de negers liederen met woorden die over hun extreme lijden gingen. De werkliederen hielpen de slaven om door de zware werkdag op de plantage te komen. Ze lieten zich bij het zingen inspireren door zowel Afrikaanse muziek (met de in het westen onbekende beats en ritmes) als door Europese (gospel-)muziek. Het engelse woord ´blue´ werd geassocieerd met melancholie, vandaar dat men in de negentiende eeuw deze liederen ´The blues´ ging noemen.
Rond 1890 werd de Blues gezongen op grote delen van het platteland in de zuidelijke staten.
Rond 1910 was het woord ´Blues´ goed ingeburgerd. De blues werd snel populair gemaakt, onder andere door de zwarte muziekschrijver W.C. Handy. Hij publiceerde de "Memphis Blues"(1912) en "St. Louis Blues"(1914). Instrumentele blues werd in 1914 voor het eerst op plaat gezet.
- Een andere factor die de groei van de nieuwe muziek in sterke mate zou bepalen waren de grote raderboten die de Mississipi bevoeren en dan speciaal op de vrachtvaart naar de andere stad die de muziek zijn faam zou geven: St. Louis. John Streckfus was niet alleen kapitein van zo'n grote boot, maar speelde bovendien viool. En nadat het vrachtvervoer door de concurrerende trein inzakte schakelde hij in 1901 met zijn vier zoons over op 'rivierexcursies'. In plaats van hutten werd voorzien in een gigantische balzaal en van New Orleans tot helemaal aan St. Paul, Minnesota, kon men al feestend en dansend de rivier bevaren.
